SCRANTON, Pa. — An hours-long standoff that began Saturday morning in Scranton has ended.
Police responded to a home along the 1600 block of Pine Street just after 10 a.m. for a report of shots fired.
When officers arrived, a 27-year-old woman suffering a gunshot wound came out of the home and was taken to the hospital.
Police were then joined by the Scranton Special Operations Unit and Lackawanna County SWAT to help arrest the alleged shooter and spent hours communicating with him, hoping he would surrender peacefully.
Around 2 p.m., police say tactical members went into the home to search for the man but were ambushed with gunfire from the attic.
"No officers were wounded, no lethal force was returned by police," said Chief Tom Carroll, Scranton Police Department.
Over the course of the standoff, residents grew more and more concerned.
"I've never seen nothing like this, only on TV. In real life, it's scary. Very scary," said Gail Janesky, neighbor.
"I just got back home, and I see lots of police cars here. I mean, I'm nervous. I see a cop with a gun, so I think there is a kidnapper or something," said Het Ray, neighbor.
"Yeah, this neighborhood. I mean, when I moved here, it was pretty good, and now I wouldn't walk the streets. I wouldn't do anything around here," said Theresa Fagerlin, neighbor.
The standoff ended just after 5 p.m. when police found the man, later identified as Tyshawn Mack, 32, dead in the attic of the home from a single gunshot wound.
"This was a domestic-related incident. There is not a threat to the community. All of the safeguards that we established to protect the community during our previous evacuations that did occur have been lifted, and the residents can go back to their homes," said Chief Carroll.
Police say that the woman injured before the standoff has been released from the hospital and is expected to be okay.
