Riccardo's Market closing after 90 years in business

After 90 years of business, a family-owned grocery store in Lackawanna County is closing.

DUNMORE, Pa. — For many people in Dunmore a trip to Riccardo's Market is a weekly ritual.

"They usually have food out. I like that. And anything else I need cleaning supplies, whatever paper towel," said Pauline Stivale, Dunmore.

But for owner Rocco Riccardo and his family, it's been a trip they've taken every day for 90 years, "In the early thirties. That was my great-grandfather. They were produce people. We slowly, slowly progressed into selling some milk and dairy products and meats and it snowballed to where we are today," he said.

But after spending more than forty years in the family business, Riccardo is calling it a career.

"Never had vacations. I work seven days a week. I'm here, I'm here at 5:06 every morning. I just can't do it anymore. I'm just tired," said Rocco.

"It's like a staple. You know, you, you come here, I live up the block. Come here. It's easy. It's convenient. They're all nice here," said Pauline.

With the news spreading across the borough, many came for one last trip to get bread and milk.

"The Italian sausage is delicious for my sauce that I make. And I love their pastry," said Rosemary Grochowski, Dunmore.

While many of the shelves are empty now, they won't be staying that way for long.

Riccardo says Wilkes-Barre-based Schiel's Family Markets is set to reopen the Dunmore store under the Schiel's name later this year.

"You know, they're real good people. And that, like, made the decision for me to sell much easier because they guaranteed my help to have jobs and everything. And, you know, that's, that was important to me," said Rocco.

The last day to make a trip to Riccardo's Market will be October 31st.
