Ribbon cut on newly-renovated park in Scranton

Oakmont Park near Lake Scranton is the latest park project to be completed using part of the city’s American Rescue Plan Act funds.

SCRANTON, Pa. — Local leaders held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday to celebrate the latest park renovation project in Scranton.

Oakmont Park on Debbie Drive, near Lake Scranton, is the latest park project to be completed using part of the city's American Rescue Plan Act funds.

"This is a park that was in disrepair when we came in and we had to demolish it during the pandemic, which is always heartbreaking," said Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti. 'But now, just a couple of years later, thanks to the rescue plan, the funding that the president was able to get to us, we are able to celebrate this new park. You see kids already out here."

The cost of the project is nearly $450,000. The park now includes safe play surfaces, new playground equipment, a gazebo, and more.

Previous park renovation projects completed using ARPA funds include Connors Park, the North Scranton Mini Park, and Novembrino Park. Additional projects utilizing ARPA funds include Capouse Avenue, which will feature the City’s second splash pad, renovations to the Connell Park pool, a new swim complex at Nay Aug Park, playground equipment at Robinson Park, and outdoor pool renovations and a skate park at Weston Field, city official said.
