Residents voice concerns over retiring firefighters

Firefighters in the city of Carbondale won't receive any early retirement incentives, at least for now, following a city council meeting Tuesday night.

CARBONDALE, Pa. — Carbondale City Council voted Tuesday night to table an ordinance that would create an early retirement incentive for firefighters in the city.

At the council meeting, some voiced concerns that pushing firefighters to retire without enough volunteers to replace them could lead to problems.

"What are you going to do, and how are you going to quote-unquote fire protection is a main priority. How are you going to man the trucks, we don't have volunteers as it is now," said Capt. Kevin Colgan, Columbia Hose Company.

"We were blindsided on this, and we're concerned. You know we have a hard time getting members," said Joe Morgan, Columbia Hose Co. Treasurer.

The mayor of Carbondale plans to hold a meeting with fire crews to discuss how to replace any future retirees.
