Renovations begin at Scranton's City Hall

Crews began placing scaffolding around the 136-year-old building along North Washington Avenue on Tuesday as part of a multi-million dollar restoration project.

SCRANTON, Pa. — Renovations have begun on a more than century-old building in Lackawanna County.

The $4.7 million restoration project is currently underway at Scranton's City Hall along North Washington Avenue.

Money from a state grant and the American Rescue Plan Act are funding the project.

Crews are fixing up the stained glass features of the building and the stonework.

City hall was constructed in 1888.

Scranton's mayor says the work is necessary to keep the historic building in shape.

"It's really important to us to maintain the history of all of our buildings.  It's something that people really find to be amazing about Scranton. You have people that have never been here before that always come for the historic buildings.  Scranton's City Hall is one of those," said Mayor Paige Cognetti, Scranton.

City officials expect the project to take about a year to complete.
