PSU Scranton students take a break on World Mental Health Day

Thursday is World Mental Health Day. Newswatch 16's Jack Culkin shows how the university ensures its students have the necessary resources.

DUNMORE, Pa. — Dozens of students at Penn State Scranton took a break from the school year on Thursday to focus on their mental health by relaxing with Cooper, the therapy dog.

"I know that a lot of students are overwhelmed at this time of year because of midterms and all of our exams and everything," said Quinise Armstrong, a student at Penn State Scranton.

During World Mental Health Day, inside the Study Learning Center, university-run clubs and outside mental health organizations connected with students.

"Our theme for our students is we are connected, and it's so important that people feel connected so that their mental health is in a good healthy space," said Sarah Smith, Counseling and Psychological Services.

As the Coordinator for Counseling and Psychological Services at PSU Scranton, Sarah Smith says mental health concerns are rising nationwide. She wants students to know they are not alone.

"Yes, we are seeing a rise in the need for mental health services. And we just want to be able to provide them either with access here directly through Penn State or with our community partners," added Smith.

"In my last four years. I kind of found it a little hard to juggle, you know, basic life work, friends hanging out with people outside of school, While also trying to maintain a good GPA in school and doing the work and getting it done," said Skylar Minichello, a student at Penn State Scranton.

Senior Skylar Minichello knows all about the pressures of college. She advises students who feel like they are struggling to get the help they need.

"We have counselors, we have psych professors that are always willing to help you with anything that you need."

Mental health services at Penn State Scranton and the university's other locations are accessible to all students throughout the school year.
