LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — Forest City Mayor Christopher Glinton says it will be all hands on deck this weekend as the borough in Susquehanna County, a notorious spot for heavy snowfall, prepares for whatever Old Man Winter throws at them.
"They always say, call for an inch down the line. Up the line here, we get 4 inches," said Glinton. "Getting everything ready, getting salt out, preparing the streets, driving around, and making sure everything is ok."
In Lackawanna County, Greg Hill of Carbondale is stocking up on three days worth of wood pellets to help heat his home during the storm.
"I just try to stay home, you know, let the people that do what they do clean the roads. Clear the roads before I try to get out," Hill said. "I know it's going to get a little colder, and when you're outside shoveling snow and plowing or whatever, I'm gonna put a plow on my quad so I can remove some snow, go in there, sit next to the fire a little bit and warm up."
While the incoming snowfall has some changing their plans, Father Nathaniel Sorochka of Saint John's Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Mayfield says the church's Julian Calendar Christmas will not be canceled.
"We do have people who travel, but they'll take the precautions if they come, or they'll make services whichever one they can make," said Sorochka.
Hosting three masses over Saturday and Sunday, Father Sorochka says he expects a few hundred people to attend, but he understands if there are some who can't make it because of the weather.
"Of course, safety is first to celebrate the Nativity of our Lord is important, but your life is important as well so people will take heed and use their own determination if they will attend services or not," Sorochka added.
