SCRANTON -- Heavy rains soaked the area, and for the second time in a week, caused street flooding in several spots.

Making matters worse, hundreds lost power in Scranton after a power line fell in the Green Ridge section hitting a house.

Most of the Green Ridge Plaza lost power Saturday afternoon and emergency crews say as many as 700 people are without power.

The Scranton Fire Department said wires fell and struck the siding of a house on Green Ridge Street starting a fire on the third floor.

They are still investigating the cause.

Fire crews said there were no injuries.

Green Ridge Street between Ross Avenue and Nay Aug Avenue is blocked off and traffic is being detoured.

Residents who were outside the house where the lines fell described the scene as frightening.

“The house was on fire for a little bit. It looked like the Fourth of July. It was very bad,” said Steve Rela of Scranton.

PPL has been on the scene and working to get the power back. Crews said a transformer blew leading the wires to fall. They said it may have been caused by a lightning strike, but are still investigating.

Emergency crews also dealt with two cars stuck in water on Green Ridge Street.
