SCRANTON, Pa. — Emergency medical workers evaluated two children, including one in a stroller, after fireworks debris fell onto the crowd gathered in downtown Scranton on Sunday for the annual La Festa Italiana display.

No serious injuries were reported and the children were released by EMS after their evaluation, Fire Chief John Judge said.

Judge said it appeared that the wind picked up and blew some of the fireworks off course, causing them to detonate at too low an altitude.

Roughly 70 of the 380-or-so fireworks went off before officials halted the display, Judge said.

La Festa President Chris DiMattio said he was grateful for the "rapid response" of first responders and thankful no one was more seriously injured.

"Mother nature threw us a curveball," DiMattio said.

He said festival organizers looked into the idea of replacing the yearly fireworks display with a light show. After Sunday night, he said a different approach for next year is under consideration.
