Pizza shop's Purple Strides Campaign fights pancreatic cancer

DaVinci Pizza employees are coming together to help raise funds and awareness for pancreatic cancer.

SCRANTON, Pa. — November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.  According to the American Cancer Society, pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in the United States.

"One in 56 men are diagnosed every year and one in 60 women," Avianna Carilli said.

Emily Yurgosky's dad is one of those men.  He was diagnosed in August.

"He just recently had surgery at Sloan Kettering Memorial like I had mentioned.  It did not go the way we anticipated but he's still on the uptrack so we're really happy with how his outlook is looking and we're really optimistic about how everything is working out right now," Emily Yurgosky said.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is raising awareness with its annual Purple Stride Walk in April and you can help them raise money for it now.  DaVinci Pizza on the Square in Scranton is hosting a fundraiser.

"We'll have literature, some giveaways, a little bit of a raffle and order pizza.  Half the proceeds go to the cause and we'll raise some awareness along the way," Dan LaMagna said.

On November 27th, 50% of all pizza sales will benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's Purple Stride Walk.  DaVinci's Owner Tyler Connor says helping this cause was a no-brainer.  His uncle died of pancreatic cancer.

"We want to be able to donate and actually help rather than just a little fraction of what we can, so 50% is fair.  We're not going to really lose too much money, a little bit, but we're not losing it because we're going to donate it and help others," Tyler Connor said.

"As much help as we can get for our planning along the way would be greatly appreciated and in the meantime we're spreading awareness, not only through NEPA, but the country at large," Carilli said.

DaVinci Pizza on the Square is located at 505 Linden Street in Scranton.
