LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — Pennsylvania American Water says it has finished dredging Roaring Brook in Lackawanna County after sediment and silt were released into the waterway earlier this year.

According to the DEP, sediment flowed into the Roaring Brook Creek in Scranton and Dunmore in February due to the construction of a project at a dam at Dunmore Reservoir Number 7.

The $17,000,000 project began in October 2023, with plans to upgrade the reservoir's dam structure and meet DEP regulations.

The department requested that Pennsylvania American Water provide a plan to remediate the damage.

The dredging plan, costing at least $300,000, began in early September along Cedar Avenue and Myrtle Street near Darcy Park in Scranton to remove sediment from the stream and its banks.

Pennsylvania American Water plans to continually monitor for additional sediment while the dam upgrade project continues at Dunmore Reservoir Number 7 and twice a year after work finishes, expected in June 2025.

Pennsylvania American Water said it will also complete an additional project in the summer of 2025 as part of the settlement with the DEP.

The project will include rehabilitating and improving a part of the Roaring Brook in Darcy Park.
