Our Lady of Guadalupe celebrated in Scranton

Members of the Hispanic community in our area are commemorating the appearance of the Virgin Mary to a Mexican Indian peasant in 1531.

SCRANTON, Pa. — The faithful came out early Tuesday to celebrate the feast day of our Lady of Guadalupe in Scranton.

The annual observance commemorates the appearance of the Virgin Mary to a Mexican Indian peasant, now venerated as St. Juan Diego, in December 1531.

Newswatch 16 stopped by St. Teresa of Calcutta parish in Scranton's south side for the morning mass.

"I just came here to spend time with the people, my family, the vision of Mary, to appreciate her," said one worshipper.

Many other parishes with high Hispanic membership are celebrating the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
