Carpenter's Union, Scranton mayor react to Joe Biden dropping out of 2024 race

Joe Biden's announcement that he will not seek reelection rippled through the nation on Sunday, hitting home in his hometown of Scranton.

SCRANTON, Pa. — This announcement by President Biden came as a shock to some of his strongest supporters in the city of Scranton.

It was just a few months ago that the 46th president campaigned in the Electric City.

But on Sunday, in a letter addressing the nation, Biden announced he did not wish to seek reelection, focusing instead on his remaining term.

Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti says she was heartbroken over the decision, but she says the Democratic party in Scranton and Pennsylvania will stay strong.

"And now move forward here for this next sprint in a way we've never done before. I think it's uncharted territory in a positive way that it's an opportunity to bring more folks into the fold here in the Democratic Party, it's an opportunity here in Scranton here in Pennsylvania to talk to people about what it means to be a democrat in a new way with some renewed energy," said Mayor Paige Cognetti, (D) Scranton.

Newswatch 16 will have more from Mayor Cognetti and others on President Biden's decision to drop out of the 2024 race at 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.
