SCRANTON, Pa. — A man faces multiple charges after police say he was responsible for a shooting inside a convenience store in Lackawanna County.
According to police, two people were shot inside a convenience store along North Main Avenue in Scranton after what started as a reported robbery just before 11 p.m. on Thursday.
Investigators viewed surveillance video from the convenience store and said the suspect walked inside and shot a 26-year-old male in the head without saying a word. He then went around the counter, asked for money, and shot a 25-year-old female employee, taking money from the register and then leaving. Both victims were taken to the hospital.
The woman was able to give police a description of the suspect, and neighbors were concerned about the search for that suspect.
"I was totally shocked to see all the police cars that were out there, and I saw a couple of ambulances and the paddy wagon," said Jo Ann of Scranton.
"I came out to see the commotion, and my neighbors next door were out too, and they were like, get inside! Lock the doors! I ran in and locked the doors, but it was scary. I was checking my cameras to see if he was running down this way," said Kristin Morgan of Scranton.
Police say the female victim reported the suspect to be wearing a garbage bag, and neighbors said he was seen in the area before the shooting.
"He was screaming at one of the neighborhood dogs, and he was wearing a trash bag," added Morgan.
Not long after, Scranton Police found a man who met the description and took 64-year-old Shelton Miles into custody.
In the daylight hours, Scranton Police were seen going in and out of Miles' home along West Market Street, executing a search warrant. Police charged Miles with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, and a gun charge.
Neighbors are in disbelief and feel for the victims in what they say feels like a random attack.
"The few times I've been over there, she's been very sweet, a really nice person. Always saying good morning, how are you," said Morgan.
Scranton Police say this isn't the first time Miles has been in trouble with the law; Miles has prior convictions, including attempted murder and attempted robbery, back in 1987.
Miles was denied bail and will remain locked up in the Lackawanna County Prison.
He is due back in court on March 19th.
