MOOSIC -- The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders are once again welcoming school kids to the ballpark by scheduling morning games.
The first was Wednesday, and while it may sound like just a fun day out of class, some schools are using it as a lesson of sorts with some fun, too.
It was baseball bright and early at PNC Field in Moosic. The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders scheduled a morning game so schools could bring take students there, and the weather certainly cooperated.
"We are very lucky. Most years we don't get this lucky so April, beautiful weather. It's a great day out," said Delaware Valley teacher Linnette Pousley.
Pousley brought her special education students from Delaware Valley School District in Pike County, turning it into a lesson in social skills.
"We've been planning this for a couple weeks now. We've been practicing how to buy lunches, making change, learning all about baseball and some of the math that's involved in the process."
The RailRiders even sent out a curriculum to follow, getting students ready for the game.
But, let's be honest, being there is more than a learning experience.
"It was fun. I'm so happy!"
"It's fun. I like it. It's great to be here!"
There are a few more of these day games before school lets out, so more schools can come to see a game and spread some interest in the RailRiders, too.
State-required PSSA testing this week may have kept many schools away from this game, but not the Benton Area High School baseball team. They're getting a little lesson, too, watching the pros play in person.
"It's fun to watch everyone play. Obviously, everyone who plays in high school wants to be here some time," said Benton senior Garret Watson.
"We got to skip school with our baseball team and got to go to a baseball team, so we could go to a baseball game. We're not going to let that go," said Benton senior Nowell Covington.
But they're also quick to admit that a day at the ballpark on a day like this beats any day in a classroom.
"It's a lot of fun, learning, picking up tips. It's 'educational!'"
