Learning how to ski at Montage Mountain

Ski season is here, and one area resort is giving beginners a little extra help.

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — Sawyer McHale spends his time in the rental shop at Montage Mountain in Lackawanna County, getting skiers and snowboarders ready to go get out on the slopes.

Montage is open for the season, and that means skiers of all levels will be out on the slopes.

But for beginners, where do you even start?

Montage Mountain launched a new way to get people who have never been out on the snow to take the leap. It's called first-timer free days.

"It's just really an introductory program totally free; we give you the lesson, the rental, and kind of teach you the basics, and what we are trying to do is introduce people to the sport," said Tyler Crawford, director of resort relations.

Instructors at Montage say, like with any new skill, you first need to get comfortable on the skis.

"It helps all of the skiers and snowboarders come out and feel more comfortable on the snow. We see people go out there and try it without a lesson, and of course, it is possible. But why not just go for it and learn from the pros?" Crawford said.

Bob Madigan has been teaching for years. He says the first lesson is all about the fundamentals. Then, you build up your skills.

"What we are trying to do is learn how to turn left, how to turn right, and learn how to slow down and stop, along with a bit of etiquette stuff that will keep you safer on the slope," said Madigan.

Montage Mountain also offers lessons for skiers who may need a refresher or are looking to advance their skills
