SCRANTON, Pa. — The Lackawanna County Commissioners filed a complaint Wednesday with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission asking it to deny Pennsylvania American Water's proposed water and wastewater rate hikes.
The water utility is seeking an increase of roughly 25 percent on water usage. That means customers would pay on average about $17 more per month.
The PUC gathered public by hosting a series of 12 hearings across Pennsylvania. A hearing in Scranton last week saw more than a dozen people testify about how the rate increases would impact their wallets.
On Wednesday, the county commissioners added their voices.
"The rate and increase requested by the Pennsylvania American Water Company would result in unjust and unreasonable rates that will impose an economic hardship on Lackawanna County and its residents," Commissioner Matt McGloin said.
