Lackawanna County holds inaugural Pickleball Classic

The first-of-its-kind event featured men's, women's, and mixed doubles at Birchwood Racquet Club.

SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA — Dozens of pickleball players tested their skills in Lackawanna County on Saturday.

The Lackawanna County Commissioners, Birchwood Racquet Club, and the county parks and recreation department sponsored the inaugural Pickleball Classic at the racquet club in South Abington Township.

Organizers say the growing popularity of the sport is something the county has noticed and wants to take part in.

"Pickleball has been increasing in popularity across the area, and the county wants to get involved and offer activities and sports that are important to the people that live in the county and Northeastern Pennsylvania," said Paul Bechtel, Lackawanna County Director of Parks and Recreation.

Proceeds from the tournament will go to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Scranton or the Green House Project in Lackawanna County.
