Lackawanna County business hosting a fundraiser to help the animals

Newswatch 16's Courtney Harrison shows us where and how employees at the shelter say the need is greater than ever.

DUNMORE, Pa. — A donation box sits between a washer and dryer at Dunmore Appliance. The business is hosting a fundraiser to collect supplies for Griffin Pond Animal Shelter. The washer and dryer were donated by the manufacturer to go to the shelter along with whatever is donated.

"It's a cause that we've been trying to help out with for a while and Speed Queen also decided to help out and donate too, so it's going for a good cause," said Nicole Gillette at Dunmore Appliance.

They are looking for food, treats, beds, and blankets. So far, the fundraiser is off to a good start.

"Some people have been able to bring one thing and some people have brought six or seven things. Any little bit helps. It doesn't matter how small or how large. We are accepting monetary donations as well," said Jason Golosky, Dunmore Appliance.

Employees at Griffin Pond say every little bit helps these days because the shelter is over capacity with animals.

"We have seen a lot more neglect cases, a lot more abandonment, where the animals need something right then and there, and being able to provide them with that necessity," said Megan Hrinko with Griffin Pond Animal Shelter.

The laundry is an endless task for volunteers, so they are looking forward to the new appliances.

"A lot less pet hair, a lot less clogging, hopefully," Hrinko said. "Any type of pet bed will be able to be put in there to be able to help give an animal something as simple as that."

Dunmore Appliance is collecting donations until April 10 and then bringing those donations and installing the new washer and dryer at Griffin Pond Animal Shelter on April 11, National Pet Day.
