La Festa Italiana Committee considering alternatives to fireworks show

New calls for safety in Scranton after officials say two children were hurt during the La Festa Italiana fireworks show Sunday night.

SCRANTON, Pa. — The fireworks show at La Festa Italiana in downtown Scranton is normally something that draws in quite the crowd.

"We've been coming here for years," said Angelica Edwards of Jermyn. "I think they're beautiful."

But according to Scranton's Fire Chief, two children were hurt Sunday night after fireworks debris fell onto the crowd.

Both children were treated by emergency medical workers and are expected to be okay, but now visitors like Edwards are focusing on safety.

"If somebody got hurt, then that's definitely a big issue, and they might want to change that because, I mean, the safety is probably their best option right now," said Edwards.

"A couple of fireworks started going off, and then the force of nature, the wind just changed course and started blowing in a different direction, and some of the fireworks kind of started to blow towards the people," said La Festa Italiana Committee President Christopher DiMattio.

Dimattio says he is grateful for how quickly first responders shut down the show and took care of the victims.

Moving forward, he says the committee will be looking into changing the display and possibly taking it in another direction.

"There's so much different technology today, you know, using lights and drones and things like that," DiMattio." "So we were looking into that actually this year. And obviously, it's gonna be what we're gonna try to accomplish next year."

Kayla Kindt of Scranton says she's been hit by pieces of a firework before.

"You're always worried. Is it really hot? You get nervous, and then you're moving back anyway," said Kindt.

While she doesn't think the show should go away, she says there are ways to possibly make it safer.

"I don't think that they should get rid of it," said Kindt. "But maybe as soon as the band is done, move everybody back so that everybody can enjoy the show safely."
