Keeping cool at camp

Summer camps around our area are filled with fun and games for children of all ages, but with temperatures like these, some activities are off-limits.

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — Reprieve from the heat of the sun can be found among the trees, at the pool, or in the stream of cool water coming from the hose for day campers at JCC Camp Daleville in Covington Township.

"Hottest three days in my 29 years here," said Vince Kalinoski, the camp director. "Trying to keep them out of the sun and superbly hydrated."

All the fun here could distract from those important things necessary to keep campers safe, but the counselors have taken on that responsibility.

"We always tell them to stay hydrated, reapply sunscreen whenever, and if it gets way too hot, we go in the shade," said Elizabeth Donovan, one of the camp counselors.

Campers say the heat takes its toll fast, even during the short time it gets to go from one activity to another.

"We've been trying to be cool, but it is still hot!"

"A lot of people think it's too hot, but I don't because I really like soccer and it's the best!"

Despite the difference of opinion about the heat wave among campers, many agree that it will be a fun summer.

"Tight-knit camp community here," Kalinoski said. "Most of my counselors are actually ex-campers, and it's a wonderful place for kids to come out and spend eight weeks."

"I think it's going to be a lot of fun," Donovan added. "I have already gotten to know a lot of the kids pretty well, and they are pretty great."
