SCRANTON, Pa. — It's a favorite winter tradition of the Scranton Running Company.
And the strong gusts of winds blowing away registration or the rain coming down on the trail weren't going to stop this year's Shiver by the River on the Lackawanna Heritage Trail in Scranton.
The event features a 2-mile walk as well as 5k and 10k runs. This is the first of two shivers that take place in the winter. Folks who have made this a yearly tradition say the crowds keep getting bigger. 400 people registered for the event.
"Because it's a fun winter run, a lot of people come out for this. When I was running 40 years ago, you would get ten to fifteen people for a winter run, and there wasn't very many, but Scranton Running, and man, do such a great job to make it a fun event," said Bill Lawrence, Scranton.
Every year, the Shiver by the River events look to support a local family in need.
The organizer tells Newswatch 16 proceeds from Saturday's event will go to Scranton Police Detective Kyle Gilmartin and his family in Scranton.
