Holiday travelers fill up their tanks before hitting the road

Newswatch 16's Valeria Quiñones caught up with people passing through Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania on the way to their Thanksgiving destinations.

PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Thanksgiving travel is well underway.

AAA projects a record 71.7 million people will hit the road for the holiday.

Longer travels come with more pit stops, and many of those travelers, like Kayla Quaranta, stopped at SV Mini Mart in Scranton to fill up.

"I'm from Jersey, so we have cheaper gas than Pennsylvania. I didn't really need gas, but I saw that it was cheap, and I was like, I might as well fill the rest of my tank," Quaranta says.

Cars were spilling out into the street at the gas station waiting for their turn at the pump. For some drivers, like Kathy Buckley, this is part of their  daily routine.

"I usually come here. I usually come home from work, and I stop by because I just pass it every day, so this is the best price in town," Buckley says.

For others traveling a longer way, like Quaranta, finding cheap gas is part of their holiday plans.

"I don't normally come through this side. I'm coming through this side just to get back home to get on the highway, and I mean, gas prices are a little bit higher on the other side," says Quaranta.

Anthony Richardson is traveling with his daughter to New York for the holiday. He waited in line for his turn to fill up.

"We're traveling. Trying to get there, and it's a two-hour drive. To be honest, I don't know if there is a gas station cheaper out there. So we fill up here, and I can get there and back," Richardson says.

"I took advantage of it. I was excited to see that it was cheap gas," Quaranta says.

"It's cheap. It's reasonable, and it's less," Richardson says.
