Lackawanna County police departments, church pitch in for those in need

Organizers of the drive say providing assistance after the holidays is critical to people in need.

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — It's help for families in need in Lackawanna County as we get a blast of winter.

The Olyphant Police Department puts together an annual food and coat drive. The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Dickson City and the Dickson City Police Department are also part of the initiative.

The groups collected coats, clothes and more than $5,000 in donations for families.

"I think this is fantastic for the community. Dickson City, Olyphant, Throop, the Mid Valley community, a lot of people in need and this is a wonderful event for that," said Jeff Kovaleski of Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church.

Organizers say this is important because some families need extra help after the holidays.
