Ham Radio Winter Field Day in Lackawanna County

The Windmill Amateur Radio Club hosted its annual Winter Field Day in Carbondale to practice sending emergency communications.

CARBONDALE, Pa. — People from all over the area gathered in Lackawanna County on Sunday for some Ham Radio fun.

Ham Radio, or amateur radio, is a popular hobby that allows people to talk across town or around the world. It can also be used to send emergency communications without the internet.

The Windmill Amateur Radio Club hosted its annual Winter Field Day at McDonnell's Grove near Carbondale.

Organizers say the event helps Ham Radio enthusiasts practice sending emergency communications, which is especially important in the winter.

"We're the ones that are pretty much set for emergency communications, where we can go out in the field with just a regular storage battery, a radio, and a wire and set up communications when the internet or anything else is completely down," said Joe Cieciorka, President of Windmill Amateur Radio Group.

People around the world use Winter Field Day to practice sending emergency communications for a full weekend in January.
