Gunfire in Scranton Wednesday night

Police were called to Penn Avenue around 9 p.m. Wednesday after shots were fired.

SCRANTON, Pa. — Police are investigating gunfire in Scranton on Wednesday night.

Scranton police were called in around 9 p.m. to the 1200 block of Penn Avenue.

Newswatch 16 was there as police marked evidence in the street.

There were no injuries or reports of damage.

The deputy police chief confirmed that the Scranton Police Detectives juvenile unit would handle the case.

The focus on juvenile and gang violence became more acute following the early morning shooting of Detective Kyle Gilmartin in January. Gilmartin, 34, was critically wounded attempting to arrest suspects involved in gang-related violence.

Aiden Deininger, 20, of Old Forge, was charged in the hospital, where he is recovering from a bullet wound that he suffered in an exchange of gunfire with police.

Police also arrested a 19-year-old, Jeremiah Cleveland, and charged him with firing a gun at houses in the city in the hours before Gilmartin was wounded.

One of those houses where gunfire was reported was the Harrison Avenue home of a man arrested in June 2022 for a role in the deadly gang-related stabbing of 18-year-old Tyler McKenna outside of Scranton High School.

Amir Williams, 18, was held responsible by a jury for McKenna's death. Williams awaits sentencing on charges of first-degree murder, third-degree murder, aggravated assault, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person.

Two weeks after the shooting of Det. Gilmartin, a teen was locked up in Lackawanna County Prison charged as an adult after investigators say he was found carrying a rifle near Scranton High School.

Sihayr Dickerson, 16, of Wilkes-Barre, faces aggravated assault and firearms offenses.

Scranton Police Chief Tom Carroll discussed the problem of juvenile and gang violence with Newswatch 16.
