Golfers take advantage of mild winter temperatures

The warm weather allowed golfers near Carbondale to get in some holiday swings.

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — The whack of a golf club on December 26th? It's true! Golfers were able to get in a round at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course near Carbondale.

The warm stretch provided by Mother Nature allowed the course to be open at least for one day.

"It's good to get out and play when there's no time left in the year. You can't go skiing, so we'll go golfing instead," said Robert Perry, Clarks Summit.

"I actually played in some snow this year already. I played in early December, and there was some snow on the ground. This is a lot nicer than that, though," said Mike Dewolfe, Gibson.

Course owner Nick Petrilak says his phone started ringing on Christmas Day with calls from golfers wanting to know if the course would open. Any tee time this late in the season is a bonus for business.

"This is a nice break, and hopefully, we'll get a couple more of them. Anytime that the weather looks decent," said Nick Petrilak, owner of Sleepy Hollow Golf Course.

The day after Christmas last year was at least 20 degrees colder, so golfers say this was a bonus to be able to try out some new gear they got for Christmas.

"I actually got a 5 wood, so I wanted to come and test that out," said Dewolfe.

Petrilak says there's always a bunch of die-hard golfers who don't care about what the weather is doing on any given day, "There's guys and gals who will come out anytime they can find their ball without having to dig in the snow for it."

And when it does snow, the next swings will have to wait until spring.
