Giant supermarket in Scranton reopens after fire

A fire two weeks ago forced the supermarket to close.

SCRANTON, Pa. — A grocery store in Scranton has reopened two weeks after a fire shut the place down.

On May 20, a pressure washer sparked a roof insulation fire inside the Giant along Nay Aug Avenue.

It took less than three weeks for the Giant to get back in business.

"For a Friday morning, it's a little busier than usual, but I think the customers were just excited to be back in their store, back with the team members here. Just a lot of great feedback" said store manager Kyla Ortiz.

But this wasn't any usual Friday morning at the Giant supermarket in the Green Ridge Plaza. Customers returned for the first time since May 20.

On that day crews were called here for a smoky fire that forced the building to close.

Customers like Fred Dysard have been waiting ever since.

"Yes, this is my store. I've been waiting for it to come back. Going to other stores was a hassle, and I'm just happy that they're open, all the familiar faces. It's like family," Dysard said.

Ortiz told us she was happy to be back in business after the unexpected break.

"A little stressful, but not hard when you have the support and the team and kind of, like, the community kind of backing you."

The Giant reopened at 6 a.m. sharp, and word spread fast.

"When I saw somebody with the bags, I said, 'Oh, look, Giant is open again, time to go shopping," Shirley Acosta said.

And the store manager assured us the Giant is 100 percent restocked.

"Whatever you want, we got."

The store's regular hours will be from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
