Former Scranton police officer sentenced for overtime theft

Paul Helring was sentenced Tuesday to six months behind bars after pleading guilty to federal theft charges.

SCRANTON, Pa. — A former Scranton police officer and police union president was sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to federal theft charges.

According to the United States Attorney's Office, from March 2021 to May 2022, Paul Helring, 48, was paid over $5,000 for working extra patrol shifts at local lower-income housing complexes, shifts he did not actually work.

The city received federal money to help pay for those patrols.

Helring will also have to pay $17,831.40 in restitution along with a $5,000 fine.
