Former police officer from Scranton has been charged with overtime theft

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Paul Helring got thousands in overtime pay for hours he never worked.

SCRANTON, Pa. — A former Scranton police officer and police union president has agreed to plead guilty to federal theft charges.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, Paul Helring, 47, got over $5,000 by claiming he worked extra patrol shifts at several local, lower-income housing complexes when he did not.

Helring served as the coordinator of the extra-duty program from 2017 to 2022.

He agrees to plead guilty to one count of theft concerning programs receiving federal funds.  As part of the plea, Helring agrees to make full restitution of $17,831.40.
