Fire forces newlyweds out of their home in Lackawanna County

Investigators say the flames were caused by a space heater inside the home.

THROOP, Pa. — "It's just too bad she just got married two weeks ago," said Dean Tallo of Dunmore.

He and other family members watched on as fire crews cut into the roof of his daughter's home along the 300 block of Oleckna Street in Throop.

"She said within a couple of minutes, it was just gone. She couldn't; it just got too big, too fast," said Tallo.

Investigators say a space heater in the living room caused the blaze.

"The original call came in about 10 a.m. was on scene here in about two minutes, and we had heavy smoke out the front window," said Chief Andy Hegedus of Throop Volunteer Hose Company. The majority of the fire was contained to the first floor here."

Family say the homeowner and a dog made it out safely, but three cats died in the fire.

Authorities told Newswatch 16 that the home is too damaged to live in.

As fire consumed the home. The neighboring property started to see some damage caused by the extreme heat. That's when workers nearby came over and took the homeowner to safety.

"She wasn't answering the door at first. My buddy said maybe they're not home, but I just kept banging, and I heard, then I heard somebody yelling," said John Jenisky.

John Jenisky and a co-worker were remodeling a home just two houses away from where the fire started.

Together, the two men got the woman to safety before the fire could spread.

"She had two dogs in there, and we went out and got her and the dogs out of the house," said Jenisky

For Tallo and his family the future of the home that's been in his family for decades is unknown.

"We redid the whole inside," said Tallo. "We were just about to start the porches and stuff, and now it's over."
