Man arrested after standoff at Lackawanna County hotel

A hotel floor was evacuated during the hour-long standoff

DICKSON CITY, Pa. — A man from Texas was arrested Friday after spending about an hour holed up with a knife in a Lackawanna County hotel room.

Dickson City Police Chief William Bilinski said an initial call at 9:30 p. m. for a domestic dispute at the Microtel Inn & Suites on Main Street turned into a standoff when a man threatened to stab himself and police if they tried to arrest him.

That man, Clarence Ernest Fields, was wanted in Texas for felony charges, police said. He brandished a knife at officers and then locked himself in a room on the first floor of the hotel.

The police evacuated the first floor and surrounded Fields' room until Lackawanna County SWAT and crisis negotiators arrived. Within an hour, they had Fields out of the room and in custody.

Officers took Fields to the Lackawanna County Criminal Justice Center for arraignment on terroristic threats and related charges.
