Delivering Thanksgiving meals in Scranton

With Thanksgiving just days away, a nonprofit organization in Scranton is making sure folks have all the fixings needed for Turkey Day.

SCRANTON, Pa. — As the pallets of food stacked up at the Friends of the Poor warehouse in Scranton, University of Scranton students stepped up to use that food to help fill bags for families in need.

"So we're going to do 150 grocery orders for families today, and it'll go to  Valley View, Hilltop, and Bangor Housing Developments," said Megan Loftus, Friends of the Poor President and CEO.

Each year, volunteers from the University of Scranton's Center for Service and Social Justice spend several hours bagging, loading, and delivering to families in need in Scranton.

The students say it's a way to give back to those who may not have a way to get to the food giveaways later in the week.

"I grew up very privileged, I own that, and I know that, and I know a lot of people don't, and I just think it's great that we have so many volunteers to come out and see their privilege but understand that some people don't have that opportunity all the time and just volunteer and be helpful," said Grace O'Krepkie, University of Scranton graduate student.

The bags include everything to make a traditional Thanksgiving meal, from stuffing to cranberry sauce.

And while there is a little bit of work involved, Senior Brooke McNabola tells Newswatch 16 they get something back as well, "I love coming to every event. Love seeing the people we get to work within the community and just getting to see the smiles on everyone's faces when we deliver all the meals. it's just great."

About 40 volunteers took part in today's event, easing the burden on the organization that feeds thousands.

"It really kinda warms your heart and makes you realize that there is a lot of hope for the future because there are a lot of kids that really care," said Loftus.

Folks who received meals Sunday had to pre-register with friends of the poor. Another giveaway on Wednesday does not require pre-registration. More information can be found by clicking here.
