Power outages, road closures, and fallen trees after snowstorm in Scranton

The season’s first snowstorm hit Scranton’s East Mountain hard, causing disruptions throughout the morning.

SCRANTON, Pa. — The season's first snowstorm brought lots of activity to Wintermantle Avenue in the East Mountain. In addition to the snowfall piling up on the street, downed trees also appeared.

The sound of a chainsaw as scranton firefighters worked to clear the roadway.

But that wasn't the only inconvenience. Farther down the street, the wet, heavy snow was also to blame for a fallen power line. This is another interruption for drivers and those parked along Wintermantle. Shoveling the snow was the morning's first chore, though some didn't mind—even if it came before we were officially in winter.

"I just love it. I'm sorry, I cannot help it. It's pretty, and it's wintertime. So we should have snow," said Wioletta Zdrok of Scranton. "For snow in the winter? It's never too early. Sorry, I know. Not everybody agrees with that. And we're facing many problems with that because we don't have electricity now, but we hope it's gonna be fixed soon. The guys are working so hard on it."

With Interstate 380 closed for several hours, many drivers used Route 307 in Lackawanna County as a detour. They found snow troubles there, too, with more fallen trees and more drivers losing their fight to keep on trucking in the winter weather.
