60-acre brush fire contained on Montage Mountain

Crews responded to the scene of a brush fire that started late Saturday night on Montage Mountain.

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — From Skycam 16, smoke can be seen rising off of Montage Mountain caused by the flames of a 60-acre brush fire that started overnight in this remote part of Scranton.

That came as a surprise to many making their way to this part of Lackawanna County.

"Gonna come up and get a ski package for my granddaughter that we purchased online. Coming up the mountain, we saw the smoke and said we will take a ride," said Glenn Simpson, Ski Mountain visitor.

The blaze is not a surprise to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, who have been warning about the risk level for brush fires like this for weeks from the ground and from the sky.

"We did see helicopters flying over and dumping water," said Glenn.

DCNR tells Newswatch 16 that Scranton firefighters are working with state officials and mutual aid from around the country to put out the fire.

Officials say no structures are in danger, and Montage Mountain Ski Resort says the fire is contained and poses no threat to the resort.

Crews wrapped up Sunday evening and will be back out to fight the fire Monday morning. Until then, there is one thing everyone agrees on.

"The answer is we need we desperately need rain to get this fire danger down and get this forest damp so we don't have this issue," added Glenn.
