Cold weather doesn’t stop local golfers from hitting the green

The cold isn't enough to deter golfers from bringing the heat on the course. Newswatch 16's Adithya Iyer spoke to those braving the cold to hit the links.

TAYLOR, Pa. — Signs are already showing that we're moving into the colder part of the year. According to the Stormtracker 16 team, Wednesday morning was the coldest since March. Despite the cold temperatures, people still carry on traditions and hit the green.

"We've gotten two years now where we have played once or twice during every month of the year. You know, when it gets too cold or snowy, or the course is closed, then we'll play on the indoor," said Jerry Haggerty of Scranton.

"My clubs are in the trunk pretty much all year until the snow flies, so yeah, I golf all year," said Mark Georgetti of Scranton.

Luckily for golfers like Mark Georgetti and Jerry Haggerty, the Pine Hills Country Club in Taylor stays open until the weather decides otherwise.

"For this golf course, it ends when snow comes. We have people that will play in 35-degree weather, so we accommodate them the best we can," said Rich Mangan, Pine Hills Country Club Pro Shop Manager.

Rich Mangan says he sees people playing in the cold all the time.

"They're crazy, I'd never do it. When you're young, that doesn't matter. When you get my age, it loses its appeal. But golfers are golfers," said Mangan.

"I just love the game, you know, I just love the game. I love coming out walking, especially this time of year. Get a nice walk in, and I just enjoy the game," described Georgetti.

"It's just a wonderful sport. It gets us out exercising, hanging out with very good friends, and we just enjoy the game," said Haggerty.
