Child dies after being hit by car in Scranton

A 2-year-old boy was hit by a car on Dorothy Street in the city's Tripp Park section, police say.

SCRANTON, Pa. — Update:

Police taped off a section of Dorothy Street in Scranton's Tripp Park section just after the accident on Thursday morning.

When Newswatch 16 arrived at the scene, two-year-old Kayden Zvolensky had already been taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Officers were particularly interested in two vehicles.

One was parked on the street.

The other was parked in the driveway of one of the homes.

Investigators took pictures of both.

But it's unclear if either was involved in the deadly accident.

Police have also not said who might have been driving.

Ultimately, both vehicles were towed away by investigators.

This scene is not far from Isaac Tripp Elementary School, and even though a lot of children walk these streets, neighbors say drivers don't always slow down.

"A lot of times yeah, unfortunately. Because with the school and everything, it just makes it a little more prevalent, I guess. I looked out my bedroom first, and all I saw was cars, and the neighbor was sitting on the ground. The ambulance was right in front of the house," said Justin Peters of Scranton.

Original story:

A child hit by a car in Scranton Thursday morning has died.

Police responded to a 911 call of a 2-year-old boy hit by a car around 11 a.m. Thursday.

Police closed down part of Dorothy Street in the Tripp Park section of the city.

The toddler was taken in an ambulance escorted by police to a nearby hospital with injuries described as life-threatening.

The Lackawanna County coroner confirms the toddler died at the hospital.

Police were taking pictures of the scene and towed two vehicles from the area. It's unclear if one or both vehicles were involved and who was driving. Police tell Newswatch 16 they are interviewing both drivers to figure out what happened.

Neighbors who home said they heard the commotion and came out to see what was going on.

"The neighbors were outside. The mom was crying, and that was basically about it. The cops were around looking around." Justin Peters said.

There is no word on any charges against the driver.
