Cemetery cleanup held in Scranton

Weeds and grass have taken over a cemetery in Scranton, but a local non-profit, along with some volunteers, hopes to change that.

SCRANTON, Pa. — A labor of love at the Washburn Street Cemetery in Scranton.

"To come in here and see the grass as high as it is is devastating. It's really heartbreaking, and I always wanted to do something that's just who I am as a person," said Amy Cusick, Christmas Miracles from Heaven.

Amy Cusick of the non-profit Christmas Miracles from Heaven is behind the cleanup.

The group helps families around Christmas and creates miracles for the community as well as our military.

"There are a lot of veterans here I didn't even realize was here, and we're finding veterans graves every single time that we are here, and it's a shame because you can't see them because the grass is so high," she said.

The cemetery has been forgotten about for quite some time, including the veterans who are buried there.

"These are people's people. They need respect. I mean, you drive by these people live here. Why would you want to see this? Come over and help out. It doesn't take much but effort, you know," said Jimmy, a volunteer.

Paying a little respect for the men and women who gave so much for our country.

"Well, we know where they're at now, and we can come down and plant flowers and that. We didn't know where they were before," said Tom West, a volunteer.

If you would like to help out, volunteers will hold another cleanup at the Washburn Street Cemetery next Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.
