Caregivers celebrated at veterans center in Lackawanna County

A veterans center in Scranton is marking a major milestone by celebrating their original caregivers and their 30-year anniversary.

SCRANTON, Pa. — A veterans center in Lackawanna County is celebrating marking a milestone on Thursday.

The Gino J. Merli Veterans' Center has provided long-term care to veterans and their families for the past 30 years.

12 caregivers original to the center were honored today.

Major General Mark Schindler tells Newswatch 16 it's not only the veterans who are heroes but the caregivers as well.

"We celebrate the great people that work here at the veterans center that through thick and thin are here for our veterans; day in and day out, 24/7, giving up their time, because as we like to say in our department, 'together we serve.'"

The Gino J. Merli Veterans' Center opened in 1994.
