CARBONDALE -- A woman is facing charges she stole tens of thousands of dollars. She was arrested and arraigned Wednesday night.
Police said last year, Ashley Sobel, 24, of Carbondale met a woman through family and from September through December, she scammed her out of $26,600 dollars.
"It was a horrible crime. The victim is a very nice lady, an older lady and she just, she was truly victimized," said Carbondale Officer Dominick Andidora.
According to police, Sobel said she had won the lottery in New York State and promised to pay money back when she asked for loans.
According to her alleged victim, Sobel said she needed money for medications for her sick children, even pretending at one point that she herself had cancer and needed money.
In a victim statement, the woman wrote: "She would call and text me all day, every day. She was always crying saying her family would not help her. They would only take from her. She would call me crying about not having clothes for the kids for school. I fell in love with the kids."
"I think it's a shame how people can just go about knowing what she's doing and just have no regard for how anybody else feels. It's pretty terrible," said Carbondale Police Officer Robert Williams.
Police think Sobel has scammed others.
"We know of one other and we would hope that if there's anybody else out there, they would come forward," said Andidora.
Sobel was arraigned on a felony theft charge.
