Broadway in Scranton returns for 63rd season

The 2023-24 season kicks off this weekend at the Scranton Cultural Center and there are some new things to expect if you're attending shows.

SCRANTON, Pa. — The 63rd season of Broadway in Scranton is ready to raise the curtain on the 2023-2024 season.

Six popular shows from Broadway will take the stage at the Scranton Cultural Center, including Hairspray, Annie, and more, with Jesus Christ Superstar beginning on Friday.

"These are national touring Broadway shows. The same show that plays here plays in Los Angeles, Cleveland, Buffalo, and everywhere else in the country, and the casts are first-rate," said Frank Blasi, executive director of the Broadway Theater League.

In between shows on Saturday, North Washington Avenue will closed for a short time for a special performance called Thrill the World.

"It's a global flash mob dance to the song, Michael Jackson's 'Thriller'. At six o'clock, the road will be closed. We'll have zombies dancing in the road to 'Thriller,' and then the road will open back up at 6:15 p.m.," said Deb Peterson, executive director of the Scranton Cultural Center.

There are a few new things to know if you're attending shows at the Scranton Cultural Center, including updated security measures.

"We've implemented a clear bag policy for bags over a certain size. Wristlet bags, the size of 4" by 6" are allowed, as well as wallets," Peterson said.

Showgoers were also surveyed at the end of last season on what they wanted to see change, and one thing mentioned was the late show times. Those have been adjusted beginning this season.

"Our Friday evening and our Saturday evening performances are now at 7:30, so that's a change that we are implementing this year, and I think everyone will appreciate that as well," Blasi said.

If you're interested in tickets for any of the shows, you're encouraged to call the box office at 570-344-1111 or buy them online at the Scranton Cultural Center's website.
