Art heist suspect, on the lam for nearly seven months, surrenders himself in Scranton

Nicholas Dombek was allegedly involved in theft ring that targeted museums, including Scranton's Everhart.

SCRANTON, Pa. — Nicholas Dombek — a Lackawanna County man wanted for nearly seven months on a slate of charges alleging he was involved in a theft ring that stole sports memorabilia, art, and other valuables — surrendered Monday to authorities in Scranton.

Dombek's attorney, Ernie Preate, confirmed that his client is in custody.

Preate said Dombek called him Monday and said he would like to turn himself in. Preate then took Dombek to the Lackawanna County Prison, where he remains.

A federal judge denied Dombek bail Tuesday morning following a court appearance, Preate said. It's unclear where he's been since the case broke.

Dombek is one of nine people accused by federal authorities of involvement in a multi-state theft ring that spanned two decades. Four of the defendants have since pleaded guilty.

Their alleged targets included the Country Club of Scranton in 2011 and the Everhart Museum in Scranton in 2005, when Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock paintings were stolen.

The group is also blamed by federal authorities for the thefts of Christy Mathewson memorabilia, Yogi Berra World Series rings, and various other valuables.
