SCRANTON, Pa. — Scranton School District officials and city leaders gathered at West Scranton High School on Friday to celebrate Arbor Day.
A weeping cherry tree and about a dozen other trees and bushes have been planted in the school's courtyard.
Painting and artwork depicting olive trees created by students were on display, and the school's string section provided music for the event.
"It’s very important in the Mediterranean region as a whole, and with its additional symbolism of peace, friendship, spirituality, we thought it’d be a perfect project in order to send a message about peace and prosperity in the Middle East," said senior Daniel Laabs.
The district is working to establish the high school courtyard as an accredited arboretum.
Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday of April.
