Original story:

It was slippery, wet, and cold as firefighters worked to knock out a fire Wednesday night at a multiple-unit home in Old Forge.

Erin Mordan lives on the right side of the house on Oak Street.

She was in her living room when the place caught fire.

"I was on my couch. My daughter went to go upstairs to take a shower. She came flying downstairs to say the house is on fire, the house is on fire, call 911, we have to get out," Erin said. "The smoke started to come through, we share a bathroom, so the smoke started to come through the walls. We came outside, and the other side was on fire completely."

She said five people live inside the building.

It's home to three apartment units.

Everyone got out OK, but two cats are missing.

Two firefighters were taken to the hospital for precautions.

People who live there say smoke and flames were coming out of the upper level of the home after 5:30 p.m.

"I turn around and see smoke coming through the bathroom walls, and I run and tell my mom, and then we got out. We go around the side, windows are falling out, flames are pouring out of it," Abby Mordan said.

Many people showed up to watch as fire crews battled the blaze, and for some, the home has special meaning.

Paula Greco Laibinis still lives in Old Forge and was born and raised in the house.

She lived here for 26 years with her parents before getting married.

"It's sad. It really is sad. What are ya, as long as no one was hurt, that's all you can say," she said.

The property owner says the damage inside is extensive.

All five people will need to find another place to stay.

Authorities say the fire was an accident, caused by an unattended candle.
