Annual Walk to End Alzheimer's held in Lackawanna County

Hundreds of people in Lackawanna County laced up their sneakers Saturday in support of finding a cure for Alzheimer's.

MOOSIC, Pa. — The sun was shining on the crowd of supporters who showed up at PNC Field in Moosic for the annual Walk to End Alzheimer's.

"This is a great cause to come out and support people, family, relatives, who may be affected with this disease," said Cheryl Chilson, Pittston Township.

Walkers were given flower pinwheels to place in the ground during a special ceremony.

The color of each flower represents the way each of the participants have been touched by Alzheimer's be it a family member or a patient.

"This is, I think, my eighth year; I have a team; Mary Jo, my mom she actually passed away on a Saturday five years ago this very day, and I enjoy coming every year to support and have a team and just honor and remember," said Marianne Boylan-McKinley, Kingston.

<We're healthcare workers. Most of us have already been to healthcare, and we encounter Alzheimer's, and most of us have seen what it can do. So we want to support. We're here to donate, you know, we're here to try to put something, whatever we can be, a presence, donations towards a cause that we all have seen how it can impact families. You know," said Raymani Thomas, New York City.

"We're here on behalf of the Pine Senior Living, just here to support the cause for Alzheimer's," said Hannah Munroe, Clarks Summit.

"This is a cause that's close to our heart. I feel like people should be aware of what Alzheimer's is and how we can help our community to have some support for it," said Ashley Loomis, Tafton.

While some volunteers tell Newswatch 16 that they don't have a connection to the cause, they say they understand the impact when they see support like this.

"I mean, obviously, the signs everywhere say it, but Alzheimer's is a pretty tough thing to live with, and we're just trying to do our part to help out," said Cameron Lowe, volunteer.

Newswatch 16's very own Ally Gallo served as the emcee of the event Saturday in Lackawanna County.
