A STEM lesson for students at RailRiders game

It was a perfect day for a ball game at PNC Field and the perfect way for some STEM students to kick off the start of summer after working hard all school year.

MOOSIC, Pa. — The stands were packed with some of the youngest fans inside PNC Field in Moosic as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders took on the Syracuse Mets Wednesday morning.

"I think it's really cool that we get to go on field trips for school, and it's almost the end of the year," Julian Decker said.

The kids cleared out the classrooms to enjoy the best parts of America's pastime while others kept track of the happenings on the diamond as the RailRiders looked to break a two-game losing streak.

"It's pretty cool, honestly, watching some of these guys that are going to be in the MLB someday so it's pretty cool," Jack Oliver said.

It's a treat for STEM students who have worked so hard throughout the school year.

"We do a lot of the same schoolwork; we just have a few extra classes. We have game programming and 3D modeling," said Sophia Leonori, Scranton STEM Academy.

But it's not all just fun and games. The learning continued with some hands-on education within the ballpark.

"A lot of them come from families where maybe they don't have as much information about careers. So, this helps them on their path prior to leaving middle school so then they enter high school with a game plan," said Cheryl Spager, South Scranton Intermediate.

These students got to enjoy some home runs instead of homework this school day.

"They're cheering, they're excited, and the weather is lovely. They're all excited," Spager said. "So are the teachers."
