118th German Day celebration in Lackawanna County

The annual event celebrates German culture.

SCRANTON, Pa. — The Waldorf German American Federation held its 118th annual German Day celebration on Sunday at Waldorf Park in Scranton.

"Which is amazing because there's not very many events that have gone on for that long. You could see we have a great crowd here to celebrate German culture," said Cathy Wechsler, event chairman.

The big celebration had all things German - food, beer, and apparel.

People from other cultures also came out to celebrate

"Excited for the music, being out in the open," said Arlene Moranville of Clarks Summit. "Celebrating the German tradition, and they play some polkas, and I'm Polish."

For some people, it's their first time here. And they wanted to showcase their German pride.

"My grandfather is really a big German guy and really wants us all. We have like matching shirts, but they're all long sleeves, so we're way too hot for that today. So, we all had to go buy different shirts, you know," said Jacob Eiden of Scranton.

Members of the Waldorf German American Federation say this German Day celebration has been a tradition for generations of German families in Scranton.

Rob Kerrigan of Scranton noted, "This club has been one of the longest surviving social clubs in, probably, in Lackawanna County. Here since 1906. Yeah, so we're doing something right."

Kerrigan's wife is German, and he's been celebrating her German culture at Waldorf for years, as well.

"It's just a lot of fun. It's just good, clean, healthy fun. That's why we do it," he said.
