COLUMBIA COUNTY, Pa. — Students learned about the ecosystem at Camp Victory https://www.campvictory.org/near Millville while splashing around in the water on Friday.
"They do studies of the water. They dig in the ponds and find macroinvertebrates and find out if our water system and the pond is healthy," said Gail Truax, Camp Victory director.
This is the final day for the Greenwood Environmental Educational Program at Camp Victory. Throughout the week, students from eight school districts brought their studies outside the classroom, engaging in hands-on activities.
"We're learning how to test water and what different animals and how to determine what animal they are," said Lily Buzas, a student at Danville Area Middle School.
"What species of insects and animals live here and how compasses work," said Garrett Vonblohn, a Danville Area Middle School student.
The students rotated through different stations, each with a different environmental aspect.
"My favorite part is looking for animals and determining what they are," Buzas said.
Truax says this program is a great way for students to complement their classroom learning.
"We have a lot of retired teachers here, so they just love seeing the kids being like we were kids when we were younger, without our cell phones and computers, getting muddy and wet, finding salamanders, turtles, and things like that," Truax said.
Camp Victory has been running this program for more than ten years.
