Running for the diamonds in Berwick

The Run for the Diamonds is in its 114th year.

BERWICK, Pa. — It's a Thanksgiving tradition in one part of Columbia County - the Berwick Run for the Diamonds.

More than 1,000 people laced up their running shoes on Thursday morning for one of Berwick's longtime Thanksgiving traditions.

"It's just a classic. It's just one of those, it's a nice course, it's not too bad. There's one hill.  It's been around for such a long time," said Tracey Yenilaicus of Mount Carmel.

The Run for the Diamonds is in its 114th year. The nine mile race is known for its hills.

"It's a local race and it's just fun.  There's spectators for the entire nine miles and it's amazing," said Jan Brown of Benton.

Some people have been running in this race for many years - some, for decades.

"Since 1985 I've been doing it 28 years and this is my 17th in a row," said Jamiee Mackert of Berwick.

"This is my 50th time. A friend of mine had his 50th last year. We're going to really walk it together, we're not going to run it.  We're just so excited to be here," said Bill Bull of Berwick.

They both love the annual race.

"Everything, the parties, the crowd, the support, it's just amazing. Amazing community this is of Berwick," said Mackert.

"The crowds around the course, you just don't get that at many other races," said Bull.

The winning runners went home with real diamonds as their prizes.

Many of the runners said they looked forward to eating lots of turkey after the Run for the Diamonds in Berwick.
