Running for an icy prize in Berwick

Newswatch 16's Mackenzie Aucker takes us to the 115th annual Berwick Run for the Diamonds.

BERWICK, Pa. — It's not your typical Thanksgiving tradition. Participants braving the rain and cold for their chance to win some shiny ice— and we're not talking about the kind you can easily find in cold weather.

"I ran it last year, I survived and happy and said you know what, let's see what a year's worth of progress will look like and we're gonna find out in a couple of hours so we'll see, it's exciting," said Manny Henrie, of Dover.

Some travel as far as Canada to lace up their shoes at the starting line and catch up with friends they haven't seen in a while.

"A fellow we know down here, Roger Davis, he's gonna do his 50th consecutive run today, and so we came down to support him and cheer him on," said Dave Yaeger of Ottawa, Canada.

Over 1,200 runners signed up for the 115th annual Berwick Run for the Diamonds. For some, it's their first time participating in the nine-mile run.

"My grandparents are from up here, so grammy and pappy John, I do it for you guys. I love you guys, that's why I come up. I come up with my family every year. We used to come to this race when I was a kid, and last year—a few years ago, I started running, and last year I was like, I'm gonna do the diamonds, now it's an annual thing," said Dalton John, of New Cumberland.

Some runners are looking forward to what most of us plan to do on Thanksgiving, filling their bellies with all the fixings after running up and down the hills of Berwick.

"It's just a lot of fun, you know, there's thousands of people here, there's so many side attractions, and you can just pick stuff up along the way," said Gino Pirolli of Mountain Top.

The winning runners went home with real diamonds as their prizes.
